Captain America: Civil War

Hello folks!  I went to watch Captain America:  Civil War yesterday.  It's the UK release day yesterday.  I've been following the Marvel movies for a few years now.  Considering all the movies are intertwine with each other, I pretty much have to follow them all.  So, I don't really have to think twice about if I should watch Civil War because I pretty much have to if I want to follow up until the next Avengers movie.  I confess, I don't read any of the comic books, I probably read them if I have the comic books, but I just don't have the motivation to get my hands on them.  My point is, I write my thoughts about this movie based on my experience from watching it in the cinema.  I don't know how different the film is from the comic book, I'm sure there are some differences because that's what happen to all films that are an adaptation of something, may it be novels, comic books, or even video games.  I think some of the reasons for film makers to make changes in adaptation films will be (a) they are limited to a certain amount of time for the film which makes it impossible to copy exactly like how the story was portrayed from its original source, and cutting some parts might not make sense to the plot, so they have to make changes from how it was written in the books or games.  (b) It's their interpretation of the plot, on how they feel can give more impact.  It might work, it might not.  Really depends on either you can accept it or not.  This is why a lot of people always say the book is always better than the film, and this is because when you read the book, it gives you the freedom to see the story through your own imagination and interpretation.  Where as when you watch a film, you are watching it through other people's imagination and interpretation, and you might like it, or you might not.  Also, (c) film industry is a business industry, they need to sell the movies, so they have to do something that can sell the movies.  This sometimes can jeopardise the quality of the movie, which do happen and it's a shame when that happens, but sometimes it's acceptable.  So, it's a matter of opinion.

I must say, I am more blown away with my experience of watching Captain America:  Winter's Soldier than this one for some reason.  I think probably because I have higher expectation for this new one because of all the characters involved.  Don't get me wrong now, I enjoyed watching it, but at the same time I won't say it's as good as I hoped.  Then again, might be my fault for putting expectation.  I tend to set the bar a little too high sometimes.  Or, it could also be because there are too many superhero movies out there with similar plot that it is starting to feel repetitive so it is slowly losing its originality.  I guess now when I'm watching any superhero movie, may it be DC Comic or Marvel, I am looking for how can they be creative with the plot to avoid all the cliche of a superhero the whole city in order to save the city kind of cliche.  One thing I like about Civil War is that it is acknowledging this fact, on how their act of heroism may not be "heroic" to a lot of people who suffer from their "act of heroism" and this kind of sets off the plot of the movie.

I will not spoil the movie for you, so I will not say anything further from that about the plot.  But in my opinion, there are some dull moments especially during the first half of the movie.  It felt like it took too long to get to where it needs to be.  Maybe that's why I feel like the movie is not as good as I hoped it will be.  I find myself day dreaming sometimes while watching the movie, which is not good, hence, the "dull moments" that I mentioned.  Although, I have to admit that I definitely enjoyed Antman and Spider-man being part of this movie.  I feel like they are a good comedic relief throughout the intense fighting scene, and I also must add that there are some humour throughout the film that cracked me up and that's always uplifting.  I also must mention about Black Panther, he is definitely a special one.  I do enjoy scenes with him in it, Black Panther is such a noble character in my opinion and he can definitely kick some ass too.  Last but not least, Martin Freeman, I don't remember the name of his character, but he is suppose to be the leader or head of something with the CIA, I don't really remember the exact words for it.  Anyway, I love Martin Freeman, he is one of my favourite actor, I think he is brilliant in what he does, BUT....I must say that I was a little disappointed with his attempt on doing an American accent.  I don't know if it's because I am too used to hearing him speaking in his British accent that my brain automatically filter his lines into a British accent, or, he just didn't convinced me enough with the American accent.  I mean, it sounded British and American at the same time.  Some words sounded American, and some others sounded British, so it was confusing and I ended up thinking what accent he was trying to do every time he speaks in the movie.  Which was frustrating because I was looking forward to see him in this movie.  I still love him though, just that I wish I could be convinced of him speaking in an American accent.  I'm not American and yet I don't feel I don't know what that says to others.  Like I said before, it might be because I'm just too used to hearing him speak in his own British accent that my brain just filter it, or it might not.  But it's enough to make me feel like his performance was a slight let down :(

Will I recommend this movie?  Yes to those who has been following Marvel movies.  Because the combination of all these characters into one movie was really great for me to witness.  So, if you've been following the Marvel universe, then you might enjoy it.  If you have not been following any Marvel movies, it might be difficult for you to relate.  Like, how did Antman ended up in this movie, or why is Captain America trying to save Bucky, or pretty much the plot does the plot comes to that all relates to various Marvel movies, especially the Avengers.  So, if you want to watch this movie, but have not been following Marvel movies...I can't guarantee if your experience will be great.  It might be, you never know, worth the shot I guess.  If I am to rate this movie from 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, I will give this movie 6.5/10.  That's it for today, until next time...toodles~
